One way to boost your success with quitting smoking, is building a list good and bad associations with quitting. When something is put into writing, it may have an affect on how you think about things. Quitting smoking can be difficult, as this can help facilitate the process.

Try to stop smoking by using the method that is easiest for your needs. Quitting cold turkey may not be successful. By doing this, you are almost certain to fail. Because nicotine is so addictive, it’s better to use therapy, nicotine replacement products, medications, or a combination of these approaches. You will have an easier time making it through early withdrawal, which will give you a better chance of quitting.

Hypnosis is an effective tool to use when you quit smoking. Hypnosis has helped many people to successfully quit for good. The hypnotist places you in a state where you are particularly susceptible to suggestion, and inserts positive ideas into your subconscious. After the trance is broken, you may find that cigarettes hold little appeal, which puts you even closer to your goal of quitting.

Changes of Chemical Dependency

AIA -- lookback-- 11-29-12

Addiction causes many changes in the lives of individuals it affects. Those changes come on rapidly, due to the effects of the drugs on the mind and decision-making skills; however, reversing the changes can take a good many years. That is the sly effect of drug addiction, it is easy to get in, but difficult to get out. Through perseverence and will, former addicts can reverse some of the changes caused by the chemical dependency, though tiny details of the changes can remain for years.

This constant struggle is the reason so many addicts agree that addiction is never truly “cured,” but is treated over time. Below, you will hear about the changes addiction causes from a former addict. Though we wish to keep her identity anonymous — and will refer to her as “Meredith” — she wishes to describe her experiences, in order to relate the understanding of how addiction changes your life, psyche, and health:

78479946“It all started with alcohol…”

I was never a partier. I didn’t like going out and getting crazy and having a wild time, that was just too much for me. I began using alcohol more and more, not as a way to get loose or comfortable, but for the opposite reason — I wanted calm and quiet, and to be alone.

I guess I picked the correct drug of choice if I wanted to be alone. My entire personality changed immediately, and what little want that I had to be social and engage with others disappeared completely in several months.

I was only 16, but I might as well have been decades older… All I did for the next year was drink in my bed, fighting off a sickness that was self-imposed. I felt like I was terminally ill; that I was going to die in that bed, and that it was inevitable, so I might as well just keep the alcohol flowing to ease the pain of it. That was the biggest change in my mind, was going from a slightly depressed teenager, to accepting my fate, and truly believing that I was going to die.

Other things began to change as well… I no longer even cared to shower, make myself food, or sleep. It no longer felt important. When you are faced with those feelings, you can’t help but feel hopeless. That was a huge change, not having any hope, aspirations, nor worth — your mind reacts to that, and leads you down the path further.

Now 13 months sober, “Meredith” has started to notice those original changes starting to fade.

When you are on drugs and alcohol, there is no visible light at the end of the tunnel. Even for the first few weeks getting sober and being in a residential treatment facility, the hope isn’t there. It is not until the chemicals are out of your system for about a month, do you start to feel hope again. Only a hint of it at first, but the longer you stay sober, the light rekindles itself and grows stronger. After 13 months, I am feeling a hope that I never had before — even before I had ever taken alcohol or drugs. It is really a great feeling.

If Meredith’s story sounds familiar, and you are feeling

the same hopelessness that she once felt, know that hope is possible.

Start considering your options for drug and alcohol treatment.

Find hope…

One of the best ways to get an accurate picture of yourself and to learn wisdom is through serving others. Whether you enjoy volunteering at a homeless shelter, helping kids at your church or cleaning up the environment, service projects can strengthen your sense of purpose and your connection to your fellow human beings.

In order to help yourself grow as a person, you should try changing risks. Living your life in the same routine, doing the same things is going to get boring after awhile and will make you feel miserable. Trying new things is exciting and will make you feel good inside.

Exercising often is going to reduce the stress in your life. If you take some time and do some activities that simulate the “flight” response in your body. This will release the excessive adrenaline that has been released into your body during stressful situations and leave you feeling much better.

One should know when it comes to personal development not to expect results overnight.
