I was never a partier. I didn’t like going out and getting crazy and having a wild time, that was just too much for me. I began using alcohol more and more, not as a way to get loose or comfortable, but for the opposite reason — I wanted calm and quiet, and to be alone.
I guess I picked the correct drug of choice if I wanted to be alone. My entire personality changed immediately, and what little want that I had to be social and engage with others disappeared completely in several months.
I was only 16, but I might as well have been decades older… All I did for the next year was drink in my bed, fighting off a sickness that was self-imposed. I felt like I was terminally ill; that I was going to die in that bed, and that it was inevitable, so I might as well just keep the alcohol flowing to ease the pain of it. That was the biggest change in my mind, was going from a slightly depressed teenager, to accepting my fate, and truly believing that I was going to die.
Other things began to change as well… I no longer even cared to shower, make myself food, or sleep. It no longer felt important. When you are faced with those feelings, you can’t help but feel hopeless. That was a huge change, not having any hope, aspirations, nor worth — your mind reacts to that, and leads you down the path further.
Now 13 months sober, “Meredith” has started to notice those original changes starting to fade.
When you are on drugs and alcohol, there is no visible light at the end of the tunnel. Even for the first few weeks getting sober and being in a residential treatment facility, the hope isn’t there. It is not until the chemicals are out of your system for about a month, do you start to feel hope again. Only a hint of it at first, but the longer you stay sober, the light rekindles itself and grows stronger. After 13 months, I am feeling a hope that I never had before — even before I had ever taken alcohol or drugs. It is really a great feeling.
